Volunteers Still Welcome

We just lost one of our volunteers and are in need of someone who can take over some of the tasks she was doing.

A few specific tasks that are still under-supported are:

  • Arrange speakers or demos for each potluck (we have suggestions for you to contact)
  • Bring reusable dishes to each potluck, wash and repeat (we provide dishes)
  • Make fliers for Potlucks and DVDs (we have a template)
  • Post fliers around town to promote events
  • Assistant Newsletter Editor (who can make sure things go out in a timely manner when I am not able to)
  • Help staff the booth at Fun with Fermentation
  • Carry materials to and from events
  • Help with set up and clean up
  • Post information to Facebook

If you’d like to help your local Weston A Price Foundation chapter please choose something that you can reliably do and let us know what it is.  If you would like more information, just let me know. I would be happy to meet with any potential volunteers to discuss what you have to offer and how we can use your skills and energy.

See Get Involved! for more examples!

Anything from Nourishing Traditions, the Healthy 4 Life booklet or Recipes of the Week would be wonderful.  A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats is always a great contribution.

August 24: DVD – Nourishing Our Children

Nourishing Our Children

Nourishing Our Children is a beautifully produced introduction to the work of Weston A. Price and the nutritional principles presented in Nourishing Traditions. Although it is aimed at parents who are still feeding young children, the information is important for everyone. You do not need to be a parent to come.

Sandrine Hann previously worked as a family therapist, art therapist, teacher, and as an educational therapist in private practice before she established Nourishing Our Children in 2005. Convinced that the children she worked with were well-fed but malnourished, Sandrine closed her private practice to devote herself to the cause of educating and inspiring parents to return to the whole, natural foods that have produced generation after generation of healthy children.

Cost: Free (Donations requested)

Donations of any amounts to the Eugene Chapter, Weston A. Price Foundation are appreciated.
$5-10 suggested for those who can afford it, and $1-4 for low-income.

Mother Earth News Fair in Albany

At the last minute I agreed to help staff a booth at the Mother Earth News Fair in Albany, OR (August 4-5, 2018).  I visited with a few Eugene area people (thanks for stopping by the booth to say hi!), met lots of new people from around Oregon and Washington, and I talked with vendors.

There were some pretty cool vendors there.  I would have liked to have purchased many of the products.

July 2018: From the Editor

Hi all,

There are four great events coming up in July, but first of all please comment on the USDA’s horrendous proposed GMO labeling!  Comments deadline: Tuesday, July 3, 2018!

USDA appears to have set out to mislead and confuse most consumers:

The USDA has proposed a rule for mandatory labels on genetically engineered foods.  And the proposal is a travesty for the farmers who work to produce non-GMO foods and the consumers who want to know what’s in their food.

  • Instead of using the long-accepted terms genetically engineered, GE, or GMO, the agency is proposing to use terminology that most consumers would not recognize, namely “bioengineered” and its acronym “BE.”
  • Companies would be able to use a symbol instead of words or letters – and USDA’s proposed symbol includes a smiley face or a sun in pretty yellow and green colors. That’s not informational labeling, its propaganda!
  • While the USDA’s own study showed that many consumers would be unable to read digital QR codes (because of a lack of a smartphone, unreliable internet, or otherwise), the agency is still proposing to allow companies to use digital QR codes in place of readable labels

THE SOLUTION:  On-package text using the accepted terms “GE” or “GMO”, or an easily understood neutral symbol.

And, more fundamentally, the USDA’s proposed rule doesn’t even include many foods made from genetically engineered ingredients:

  • New forms of genetic engineering such as CRISPR (gene editing) and Synbio (Synthetic Biology) could be excluded.  So only foods with the older GMO crops would be labeled, while consumers would be left in the dark about all the new foods coming down the line — such as oranges, cacao, potatoes, soy, and canola – using CRISPR and other gene-manipulating technology.
  • The agency has left open whether many processed foods made with GE commodity crops should require labels. Many of these products, such as cooking oils, sodas, and candies, are so highly refined that current DNA tests may or may not “show” the GE content in the final product, despite the original ingredient indisputably being GE. If left out, hundreds of GE foods will not have to be disclosed.

THE SOLUTION: Any food made with ingredients that were genetically engineered by any method should be labeled as such.

TAKE ACTION

If you sign an online petition, USDA will count all of those signatures as a single comment. To really make your voice heard, you need to submit your comment directly to the USDA.

In addition, personal comments that explain your reasons have a greater impact. It’s more effective to comment on just one or two of the issues, and include your reasons, than to simply list all the problems we discuss above.

Deadline:  Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at 11:59 pm.

Before you go to the Regulations.gov website, write your comment down in Word or another file – that way, if there is an internet glitch, you don’t lose it.

Sample comment:

I am a [farmer, small food business, consumer, parent …. ].  I urge USDA to provide clear, on-package labeling of foods that contain ingredients made from genetically engineered crops, regardless of the specific type of technology used.

Use the discussion above to help you choose which issue(s) you want to comment on.  Your comment can be as short or as long as you like – what matters most is providing your individual thoughts and reasons.

To submit a comment online:

1.       Go to https://www.regulations.gov/comment?D=AMS-TM-17-0050-0004

2.      Copy and paste your comment in the top box, or attach the file

3.      Fill out your personal information and then click the “continue” button at the bottom.

4.      It will go to a page that shows you what your comment will look like on the site. It also allows you to edit the comment if you want to.

5.      At the bottom, there will be a statement that you have to confirm: “You are filing a document into an official docket. Any personal information included in your comment and/or uploaded attachment(s) may be publicly viewable on the web.  I read and understand the statement above.”

6.      Click the box, then click “submit comment” under it.  The site will give you a receipt with your comment number on it.

You can also send your comment in by fax: (202) 690-0338

Faxed comments should include the following reference:

Date Posted: May 4, 2018
Federal Register Number: 2018-09389
Docket ID: AMS-TM-17-0050Agency: Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS)Parent Agency: Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Thank you for taking action!

What I Want: Clearly Labeled GMOs

This comes to us from one of our local members:

What I Want: On-package text using the accepted terms “GE” or “GMO”, or an easily understood neutral symbol.

The USDA rule doesn’t even include many foods made from genetically engineered ingredients:
New forms of genetic engineering such as CRISPR (gene editing) and Synbio (Synthetic Biology) could be excluded. But consumers aren’t looking for information on what technique was used – they just want to know whether it was made with genetic engineering or not. And foods such as oranges, cacao, potatoes, soy, and canola are in development to be “bioengineered” using CRISPR technology….

May 25: DVD – The Story of Northstar Bison

by Lee and Sean Graese

I attended this talk in person at the last Wise Traditions Conference, and have to say I found it very moving and inspiring.  The family-owned and operated Northstar is raising bison for meat to restore bison to the prairie.  They showed a movie with beautiful images of their bison, and their high commitment to the ethical treatment of the animals and the land.

Eating bison to save bison seems counter intuitive, right?? Simply put; Eating Bison is Voting for Bison…  Read More >>>

“I have to tell you, Lisa, I went through many pages on your site and was flabbergasted at the beauty, simplicity, articulateness, but mostly the ENORMOUS amount of incredibly helpful material to ANYONE no matter where they are in their transition to Real Food.  I’ve not seen any WAPF chapter website so thoroughly engaging with their members and so utterly well stocked with information.  All the links!  All the pages!  All the quality information.  Both my co-chapter leader and I were both floored.  All your info is up to date with multiple events and activities.   We were astounded by the amount of time and work put into your site, and your group.  It was all so encouraging.

I also saw you have a fb group and a fb page.  It appears the group is meant for event announcements and notices, and to point the way to the fb page, which points the way to the website.  And then you have a IG account on top of it all, with great pictures.”

It is so nice to hear that someone appreciates the website!

If you haven’t visited our website, please do! The information is there for YOU! The local people of Eugene/Springfield and nearby areas.  We try to make it as helpful as possible.  Here are a few of our pages you might want to view:

“Hi, my name is ____ and I am a constituent. I am calling to ask Representative ____ to OPPOSE H.B. 4157, which would mandate meningitis vaccines for 10 and 11 year-old school children.

Vaccine mandates are contrary to the concept of informed consent for medical procedures.

According to the CDC’s website, meningitis vaccines can cause serious allergic reactions and injury, including death. In addition, the CDC acknowledges that they have limited data on the efficacy of these vaccines and that meningococcal disease is at a historic low in the U.S.

I urge Representative _____ to oppose H.B. 4157.”

If you send an email, be sure to personalize it. You may wish to use a couple of the talking points below. Don’t copy all of them – just use them as ideas to help structure your own message.

Tell Congress to support local meat production

This comes to us from the Weston A. Price Foundation. If you haven’t yet called or written, there is still time.

Last November, we asked you to contact your Congressional representative to urge passage of the PRIME Act, which would make it easier for small-scale livestock producers to sell meat to local consumers. Since that alert, several more legislators have signed on as co-sponsors! Now, the best chance for getting that bill passed is to attach it to the Farm Bill – and we need your help to get even more co-sponsors to make that happen.

Our local Representative is Peter DeFazio. His phone number in Washington DC is: 202-225-6416
Please call and urge him to co-sponsor H.R. 2657, the PRIME Act.

February 16: Potluck & Demo

Friday, February 16, 2018
6:30 PM

Sorry for the short notice.  Someone else scheduled the room on the date that we wanted, so we had to take what we could get at Natural Grocers.

What to bring?

Anything from Nourishing Traditions, the Healthy 4 Life booklet or Recipes of the Week would be wonderful.  A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats is always a great contribution. See more ideas…

Demo: Meat stock, bone broth, soups and stews

I will demonstrate making bone broth, and we will discuss the differences between meat stock, bone broth, soups and stews.  We will discuss some basic patterns for making soups and stews, and have several types of broths to sample.

February 23: DVD – Nourish Your Neurons

by Amy Berger

I attended this presentation live at the Wise Traditions Conference last year, and really enjoyed it. I thought Amy Berger did an excellent job of explaining Alzheimer’s disease and her recommended treatment.  I recommend this presentation for anyone who wants to understand the brain.

Description:

Few illnesses are as frightening and feared as Alzheimer’s disease. It seems to strike indiscriminately and the best conventional medicine has to offer are medications that are largely ineffective at slowing or stopping disease progression. However, the scientific literature is replete with research referring to Alzheimer’s disease as “type 3 diabetes” or “diabetes of the brain,” owing to the fundamental role of impaired glucose metabolism and insulin signaling in the brain. This talk will explore the concept of Alzheimer’s as a “metabolic condition, with a metabolic solution…

Anything from Nourishing Traditions, the Healthy 4 Life booklet or Recipes of the Week would be wonderful.  A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats is always a great contribution.

Bring enough to share with everyone and be sure to include some traditional fats!

We’d also like to encourage you to bring your own plate and utensils to help us reduce the use of disposables.  Thanks!

Know any young couples who are planning to have children sometime?  This is important information to know BEFORE pregnancy.
