February 2018: From the Editor

February 16: Potluck & Demo

Friday, February 16, 2018
6:30 PM

Sorry for the short notice.  Someone else scheduled the room on the date that we wanted, so we had to take what we could get at Natural Grocers.

What to bring?

Anything from Nourishing Traditions, the Healthy 4 Life booklet or Recipes of the Week would be wonderful.  A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats is always a great contribution. See more ideas…

Demo: Meat stock, bone broth, soups and stews

I will demonstrate making bone broth, and we will discuss the differences between meat stock, bone broth, soups and stews.  We will discuss some basic patterns for making soups and stews, and have several types of broths to sample.

Tell Congress to support local meat production

This comes to us from the Weston A. Price Foundation:

Last November, we asked you to contact your Congressional representative to urge passage of the PRIME Act, which would make it easier for small-scale livestock producers to sell meat to local consumers.  Since that alert, several more legislators have signed on as co-sponsors!  Now, the best chance for getting that bill passed is to attach it to the Farm Bill – and we need your help to get even more co-sponsors to make that happen.

Our local Representative is Peter DeFazio.  His phone number in Washington DC is: 202-225-6416
Please call and urge him to co-sponsor H.R. 2657, the PRIME Act.

(I just did, it took less than 2 minutes)

February 23: DVD – Nourish Your Neurons

by Amy Berger

I attended this presentation live at the Wise Traditions Conference last year, and really enjoyed it. I thought Amy Berger did an excellent job of explaining Alzheimer’s disease and her recommended treatment.  I recommend this presentation for anyone who wants to understand the brain.

Description:

Few illnesses are as frightening and feared as Alzheimer’s disease. It seems to strike indiscriminately and the best conventional medicine has to offer are medications that are largely ineffective at slowing or stopping disease progression. However, the scientific literature is replete with research referring to Alzheimer’s disease as “type 3 diabetes” or “diabetes of the brain,” owing to the fundamental role of impaired glucose metabolism and insulin signaling in the brain. This talk will explore the concept of Alzheimer’s as a “metabolic condition, with a metabolic solution…

2018 Steering Committee Meeting – In Review

We had our 2018 Steering Committee Meeting in January, and I am happy to say that we got another couple of great people who volunteered to help the Eugene Chapter, WAPF continue to function this year!

We still have a few tasks that were either not claimed or are still under-supported.  So if you would like to help out, please give us some idea where you would like to plug-in.

A few specific tasks that are still under-supported are:

  • Backup Newsletter Editor (who can make sure things go out in a timely manner when I am not able to)
  • Lookup DVD info for Newsletter
  • Host a food workshop at your home
  • Carry materials to and from events
  • Help with set up and clean up at events
  • Make sure we have a meat dish at each potluck
  • Post fliers around town to promote our events

If you would like more information about any of these, just let me know.  I would be happy to meet with any potential volunteers to discuss what you have to offer and how we can use your skills and energy.

See Get Involved! for more examples.

Oh yeah, and let us know what you would like to see the Eugene Chapter do this year.  What topics would you like to see demonstrated? What farms would you like to meet?  What else do you want from this group?  We want to know.

Eugene Chapter, Now on Facebook!

Thanks to our new volunteer, the Eugene Chapter, Weston A. Price Foundation is now on Facebook.

We would be willing to make deliveries to the Eugene area monthly if a few families wanted to start a buying club with a minimum total order of $500.
We want to give you access to our farm products and realize its a little bit of a drive to get to our farm so we came up with this other option.
