This presentation was the Keynote Address from the Wise Traditions 2013 Conference.

This presentation will describe the evidence for pathological and functional changes in the intestine of children on the autism spectrum with gastrointestinal symptoms. The mechanism and causes of this injury and how it might lead to neurological dysfunction will be discussed. Opportunities for treating and preventing the disease and its consequences will be set out as a basis for further research.

Andrew Wakefield, MD is an academic gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School (part of the University of London) in 1981. He pursued a career in gastrointestinal surgery with a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease. He qualified as fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1985 and was awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2001. He has published over 140 original scientific articles, book chapters and invited scientific commentaries. In the pursuit of the link between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurological injury in children, Dr. Wakefield lost his job, his career, his fellowships and his medical license. He is a bestselling author and co-founder of the Autism Media Channel, a TV and video production company that seeks to bring awareness and hope to those interested in childhood developmental disorders.
