August 2014: From the Editor

Hi all,

Here’s the scoop for this month:

No Potluck in August:

First of all there will be no potluck in August.  If you would like to see one in September, we need you to volunteer to host it!

Our potlucks are traditionally on the second Monday of the month (or sometimes Wednesdays). Suggested upcoming dates include: September 8th, 10th or 17th, October 13th, 15th or 22nd  (but if you would like to volunteer on another date, let us know).  To volunteer, please contact Megan.

DVD showing – The Beauty of Traditional Brew: Continuous Kombucha by John Moody

Filmed at the 2013 Wise Traditions Conference, John offers demonstrations on how to brew kombucha from start to finish, including flavoring and other facets of fermentation. John has been brewing kombucha for big and small events for over half a decade and loves seeing others catch the fermenting bug.

Robotics Camp & Arts Camp:

I would like to let you know about an event that is not food-related.  The Eugene Sudbury School (a local school that has allowed us to use their facilities several time to show children’s health DVDs) is hosting a Robotics Camp and an Arts Camp in August for children 9-12.  Check them out!  My son has attended the Robotics Camp the last two years, and is greatly looking forward to his first time in the 9-12 age group!

Important Message from Your Chapter Leader:

And now, I would like to share a little info with you all.  I have already told our informal “steering committee” that I am nearing burn-out on volunteering.  This summer I have several big jobs at work (yes, I do have an outside job in addition to being a wife, mother, and overloaded volunteer!), and I just can’t keep up with my previous level of involvement.

So, if you appreciate the work that the Weston A. Price Foundation does, please consider volunteering to help spread the load.  There are many levels of involvement, and knowledge requirements.  You don’t have to be ME!  Just find a place where your own unique skills and interests can contribute to this wonderful community of traditional-foods enthusiasts.  Contact me to discuss possibilities.

Special Thanks:

And speaking of volunteers I would like to thank a few of our wonderful volunteers:

  • Megan, who has hosted many potlucks in her home, and has been ordering books so that the Eugene Chapter may make some unique books available locally.
  • Claudia, who has been “shlepping” Kraut Pounders, packing and mailing them around the country to raise money for our chapter.  Without her, the Eugene Chapter would be constantly begging for money in order to buy DVDs, pay for our web hosting and other costs involved with running this chapter.
  • Cherie, Claudia, Sara, Kelly, Victoria, Kim and Erin who have all volunteered their time to teach cooking and fermentation classes.
  • Mark and Mareev, who have volunteered their talents in graphic design and computer assistance.
  • Yaakov, who has taught classes, and staffed tables at events representing the Weston A. Price Foundation.
  • Rouanna, who has recently volunteered to take over showing the DVDs each month, so that I can spend more time home with my family (and try to get my son to bed before 10 or 11 PM on those nights!).  I have shown DVDs nearly every month for the past 6 1/2 years (see past DVDs), and I am ready for a break.  Please stop by and thank Rouanna for volunteering to take this task off my plate.
  • (And if I’ve forgotten anyone, please forgive me, as I was saying, my brain is somewhat fried at times).
  • We need you too!  See Get Involved! for ideas.

Thank you everyone!  I couldn’t do it all without you!
