A Crash Course in the Microbiome of the Digestive Tract

With Sue Ishaq, PhD, Research Assistant Professor of Microbial Ecology at the University of Oregon

With the rise of research into the microorganisms that live in the digestive tract, “you are what you eat” has taken on a new meaning.  These complex microbial communities help the host get the most nutritional value out of their food, they teach the immune system “friend” from “foe”, and they make up a fundamental part of our physiology.  But, these gut communities can have dramatic effects on health.  In this talk, microbial ecologist Sue Ishaq will give a crash course in the gut microbiome, including the effect of maternal influences, diet, and probiotics, and discuss current research in animals and humans.

Sue is a research professor at the University of Oregon, in the Biology and the Built Environment center, who studies how humans affect the indoor microbiome and how it affects us back.  She got her Bachelor’s in animal science from the University of Vermont in 2007, and her PhD in Animal, Nutrition, and Food Sciences from UVM in 2015.  Her doctoral study focused on the rumen microbiome of moose, as well as a number of other wild and domestic animal species.  Prior to taking a position at UO, Sue was at Montana State University for two years studying microbial ecology in animals and soil.
