April 6: Virtual Potluck & Butter Demo

Food at our last in-person potluck.

Monday, April 6, 2020
Begins promptly at 6:00 PM

This was originally planned as our regularly scheduled potluck. We decided to keep the day and time and have it as a “Virtual Potluck”. What is a virtual potluck? you might ask. Well, we’ll find that out together as I just made it up! As at our regular potlucks, we will check in with everyone to see what they’ve brought (or made recently). We will discuss foods and in particular how you are feeding yourself during this current situation. How do you cook from stored foods? How do you safely go to the grocery store? How do you locate locally grown nutrient-dense foods? What foods are you growing at home?

This meeting will be fully interactive! Please hook up camera and microphone if possible so that you may fully participate. Bringing food to the virtual potluck is not required, but it is highly encouraged (unfortunately there will be no sharing bites). If you don’t have a camera on your computer you can photograph something you’ve made recently and share it with us as a still photo.

Local Eugene Chapter volunteer and chef, Courtney Queen, from the recipe blog Butter For All will be demonstrating making cultured butter!

Hope to see you there!

Butter For All on Instagram

6:00 – 8:00 PM

Location:

Natural Grocers
201 Coburg Road
Eugene, OR 97401

Topic:

The conversation topic this month will be an Introduction to Sourdough Breads Baking Basics. Courtney Queen from the website Butter For ALL will explain what sourdough is, what makes it nutritionally superior to modern bread, why many people with gluten sensitivity can eat sourdough, how to start a sourdough culture from scratch, how to maintain a vibrant thriving culture, and how to bake amazing sourdough bread with a variety of local heirloom grains. She will also discuss gluten free sourdough options and where to find those resources, and why eating plenty of saturated animal fats (with or without bread) is important for our wise traditions.

As a special bonus, we will check-in with Lisa, who will be sending us live video from the 20th Anniversary Wise Traditions Conference in Dallas, TX.

What to bring?

Anything from Nourishing Traditions, the Healthy 4 Life booklet or Recipes of the Week would be wonderful.  A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats is always a great contribution.

Bring enough to share with everyone and be sure to include some traditional fats!

Children and guests welcome.  Please bring dishes and serving utensils for your dish.  Thanks!

Go EAST on 19th past the University of Oregon campus. Follow signs directing you towards Hendricks Park. When 19th ends at Fairmount Blvd., turn RIGHT. In one block, turn LEFT on Summit and go to the top of the hill where you can see the Hendricks Park Picnic Shelter. (Do not turn left on Birch.) Stay on Summit as it curves right, becoming Floral Hill Drive. (Do not turn right onto Fairmount Drive back through the woods.) In one block, when you exit the park where the houses are, Floral Hill Drive curves right at the yield sign. (Do not keep going downhill onto Sylvan.) 2210 Floral Hill Drive is the 7th house on the right that you can see; aqua, orange and gray.
