Message to Eugene Chapter members:

My wife Laurie and I are just in the beginning stages of building up our small herd of Scottish Highland Cattle.  I  ( Michael) am the green thumb in the family and find that farming is very fulfilling for me and it has been a life long passion of mine. I also find that farming is very relaxing for me and a good stress reliever.  Laurie and I have a small 20 acre parcel of land that is a bit brushy and have found that the Scottish Highland cattle are good browsers and a very hardy breed of cattle that has not been altered much from there founding in the northern Highland mountains of Scotland.  So we thought that these cattle would do well on our property and they have.  We also like this breed for there lean meat as they are notlike traditional cattle with a large amount of fat on the outside portion of their body.  Scottish Highland cattle have a thick layer of hair that protects them better from the elements, thus negating the need for a large fat layer.  So anyone looking for beef gets a little more bang for there buck when buying Highland beef because they are paying for beef with out a large amount of fat.  The meat is also very good and tender.  We also only believe in naturally raising our beef.  I don’t have the time or money to get certified but do believe in the practices of organic farming.  We also treat our animals like family, they are very docile animals and are very curious creatures that love to be combed. We would love to show anyone our cattle.
