Wise Traditions Conference (Victoria)

WAPF Conference Impressions, 2011

By Victoria Schneider, NTP

Looking out over a sea of people, chatting, eating, enjoying, gave me a sense of tribalism. Here all the people gobble up butter, finding any morsel to spread it on. Here we share a belief in the traditional wisdom of our ancestors, enjoying liver pate like nowhere else. Here we can be ourselves knowing we share a common belief and shock and awe in our dietary habits does not exist. It is comfortable, exciting and it’s a huge conference room full of like minded souls.

After feasting, we fan out scurrying to our chosen “tracks” of Nutrition and Wellness, Traditional Cooking, Biodynamic Farming, Child Health track, Environmental and Recovery tracks too. Some rooms are full of several hundred students, eager to learn all the speaker has to offer. Others are somewhat obscure, like “How and Why to Keep Bees in Top Bar Hives”.  It was great and I thought of my friends who are making an effort to keep bees without much success. Maybe they need info on Top Bar hives.

There is no place to be bored, something for everyone. So exciting it is that I tended to bounce around to get a sample of several before settling down to deepen my understandings.

And then, the exhibitors…..O’my! There are too many wonderful foods and beverages to sample. Which to buy? So great to see what wise entrepreneurs have created from Sally’s timelessly wise cookbook: soaked sprouted grains for bread making, crispy nuts, pemmican, Kvass and our age old friends, sauerkraut. The list goes on and on.  My favorite: fresh frozen salmon eggs. It was like eating tiny bright orange water balloons filled with the sea. Simply magical.

This was only my second Wise Traditions conference. The exciting news is: next year it will be in Santa Clara, California, only the second conference on the West Coast. The topic will be Nutrition and Behavior. If you have aspirations to attend, this one could be your chance. It is surprisingly affordable if you want to volunteer.   I do believe I will be there!

  • I’ve always wanted to go!! Thanks for sharing the experience!! Wondering how far of a drive Santa Clara is from Eugene? 🙂 We live an hour outside of Eugene and I’ve been dreaming of going…

      Taryn,

Santa Clara is just a little south of San Fransisco, so it is about a nine hour drive. There will definitely be several of us from Eugene going, so there will be opportunities to carpool or caravan together! I’ll probably be taking my van. We’ll start making plans in the summer. Look for details in the newsletter.
